Truth, Trump, and Education: An Unpartisan Approach

CMEI Colloquium
Larsen Hall, Harvard Graduate School of Education
March 23, 2017

The recent Presidential elections have given rise to a crisis in political debate and participation. Is reasoned dialogue possible, or even desirable, when the various sides appear to be so divided on fundamental issues and values? The crisis extends to education as a training-ground for citizenship. Which version of “truth” is the teacher to promote, embody, or question? Drawing on a philosophical investigation of recent events, Dr. Harouni highlighted the tensions that exist in everyone between a will to understand and communicate and an equally essential will to ignore and obfuscate reality. How do  issues of race, class, immigration and gender in the United States complicate pedagogy? Finally, Dr. Harouni proposed approaches to educational work that can lead to a greater comprehension of one’s own place in the larger political situation.
