Building a Better Measure of School Quality

CMEI Colloquium
Larsen Hall, Harvard Graduate School of Education
October 6, 2016

Today, parents and policymakers can access school- and district-level data in historically unprecedented quantities. Yet available information largely consists of student standardized test scores, which offer a limited picture of school performance and which correlate strongly with student socioeconomic status. Consequently, such data may produce a distorted picture of school quality. This talk discussed a Somerville-based project designed to produce a broader and more diverse range of information about schools. It included a discussion of preliminary research findings and grassroots policy efforts.
