Global Education's Troubling Questions: What Are the Benefits and, for Whom?

CMEI Dialogue
Larsen Hall, Harvard Graduate School of Education
November 12, 2014

Global education and internationalization are recognized as the essential elements of progress in the 21st-century. Yet, this raises serious questions: whom is global education and internationalization meant to benefit; and for what social, economic, or political purposes? Some scholars have noted the precarious place of global education in Western institutions, while others have criticized global education projects as facilitating the spread of Western culture and economic systems at the expense of local communities around the world.

This Dialogue tackled the power, politics, and pedagogy of global education in a rapidly changing time. Four distinguished panelists contributed to our discussion—each bringing a unique perspective and position to this contentious issue.
