NOT BY CHANCE, BY DESIGN: KIRAN SETHI IN CONVERSATION WITH HOWARD GARDNER

Date:

Wednesday, March 27, 2019, 4:30pm to 6:00pm

Location:

Eliot Lyman, Longfellow Hall

What is the purpose of education?”, and “What role does the child play in their education?” have been driving questions for Kiran as she set up and built Riverside school over 18 years as a place where children became co-creators or co-designers of the learning journey. Kiran has drawn deeply from her expertise in design thinking to create a unique, user-centered approach to learning.  Using the simple framework of Feel/Imagine/Do/Share children have demonstrated that their education is actioned when they courageously and empathetically engage with life as citizens who have the skills to shape a more desirable future not only when they ‘graduate’ but, today and now. With Design for Change, Kiran has expanded this approach across 65 countries over 10 years – and her most important learning has been that it is universal and works irrespective of age, gender, culture and demographics.

In this session, participants will engage with Kiran as she shares her story through case studies of Riverside and Design for Change and further delve into insights and experiences through a conversation with Dr. Howard Gardner.

By end of the session, participants will be able to:

·         Challenge assumptions about the role of age, gender and demographics in cultivating student agency

·         Leverage insights from design thinking frameworks to make empathy the catalyst for purposeful student agency

This session is not just for educators – Kiran believes this approach is relevant for designers, for parents, for entrepreneurs … anyone who is excited about a mindset of optimism, collaboration and human-centeredness in the work they do.
