Social Media: Challenges for Change

Social media dramatically democratizes; how should civic education be reshaped for new forms of participation? What skills do young people need for negotiation, conflict management and the anxieties around public exposure of their values and partisanship? When is changing norms as important as changing laws? This panel addressed provocative and challenging issues related to civic media.

 

Panel Biographies:

Carrie James is a Principal Investigator at Project Zero and a Lecturer on Education at HGSE.

 

Sangita Shresthova is Director of the Media, Activism and Participatory Politics (MAPP) project at the University of Southern California.

 

Ethan Zuckerman is Director of the Center for Civic Media, Principal Research Scientist at the Media Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Helen Haste (moderator) is Visiting Professor of Education at HGSE and CMEI Co-Convener.
