Carrie James
Carrie James is a research associate and a principal investigator at Project Zero (PZ) and a lecturer on education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. A sociologist by training, her research explores young people's digital, moral, and civic lives.Since arriving at PZ in 2003, James has worked with Howard Gardner and colleagues on The Good Project. She also co-directed The Good Play Project, a research and educational initiative funded by the MacArthur Foundation, focused on youth, ethics, and new digital media. At present, she is co-Principal Investigator of the Good Participation project, a study of how youth "do civics" in the digital age that is part of the Youth and Participatory Politics (YPP) research network. In collaboration with the YPP network and Facing History and Ourselves, James and colleagues are developing classroom materials to support youth as they use social media to participate in public life. She is co-Principal Investigator of the Out of Eden Learn project with Liz Dawes Duraisingh and Shari Tishman. Out of Eden Learn is an educational online community and companion to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Paul Salopek's epic Out of Eden Walk. Carrie also co-directs PZ Connect, a collaboration with Independent Schools Victoria (Melbourne, Australia). PZ Connect provides online professional development for teachers related to Project Zero ideas. James' publications include Disconnected: Youth, New Media, and the Ethics Gap (The MIT Press, 2014) and numerous articles in journals of media and communication. She is a recurring faculty member for the Project Zero Classroom and the Future of Learning summer institutes. She holds a M.A.(1996) and a Ph.D.(2003) in Sociology from New York University.
